Snowy Owls are all over the prairies this time of year but they are pretty hard to spot. Uber-zoom Canon SX50HS gets you close enough to these amazing birds. We’ve managed to find some on every trip so far. Apparently they need to catch 7 to 12 mice/ or 3 to 5 lemmings every day to not starve this time of year. That’s roughly 1600 lemmings per year/per owl. There is a bit of a snow owl irruption this year because the lemming population boomed in the arctic circle recently. Snowy owl numbers fluctuate alongside lemming populations.
There also seems to be some bald eagles around.
